Grant Klein

Dr Grant Klein founded Grant Klein Advisory Services in 2025. He did this so he could focus all his work energies on projects that align with his passion – to make transport services the best they can be, serving the societal needs of all. Grant works within his clients’ teams and their advisors, accessing a network of talented individuals to supplement his skills and capabilities as required.

Grant began his career developing new technologies for the transport market, from automatic weigh and classification systems to electronic tolling tags. His biggest early achievement was as part of the team that specified the Traffic Message Channel for broadcasting digital traffic information. That formed the basis of his Doctoral thesis and its legacy continues in the ways traffic information is shared across Europe, not least in how satnavs receive real time updates on link journey times.

He spent five years as an editor and journalist for Waters, a New York specialist publisher, covering the European markets for road traffic technology, high speed rail and logistics innovations. There, he co-authored research reports into the global tolling and traffic detector markets.

At Detica, he led the technology strategy for National Express Group, serving as interim CIO when the group was bringing together its growing UK and international train, coach, bus and airport businesses. He applied systems thinking to the challenges of road pricing, while serving as chief technical advisor for the Department for Transport road pricing programme.

At PwC, Grant helped build and then led the UK transport practice. His client work included devising ticketing schemes, improving customer contact services, and securing funding approvals for innovative multi £bn transport infrastructure plans. He established a leadership team covering strategy, finance, procurement, operating model, data analytics and assurance services, with a client base across the UK transport sector. He also launched PwC’s global transport network, advising on projects in Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, New Zealand and Australia.

Grant’s mindset is always about putting yourself in the shoes of others. That stretches from different customers for a service, different interests on an organisation’s board, and stakeholders with very different agendas. At its heart, it’s about respecting and understanding every individual’s needs, experiences and skills. He champions inclusion, challenges bias and believes that understanding people is the key to solving complex problems.
